Getting to Know Phra Somdej, the King of Thai Amulets
A short history of Phra Somdej and why collectors seek it so eagerly.
Phra Somdej is one of Thailand's five most famous amulets (the Benjapakee). It was first created by Somdej Phra Buddhacharya (Toh) of Wat Rakang in the 19th century.
Its form is simple: a seated Buddha on a tiered throne within a rectangular frame, made from a blend of sacred powders, shell lime and other holy materials.
Phra Somdej is believed to bring charisma, good fortune and all-round protection — which is why it is called the 'King of Amulets'.
